Hi, I’m Roslyn Saunders, I’m a Addiction Coach
As an addiction recovery coach, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impact of addiction on individuals and their families. It’s a journey that can feel isolating and overwhelming, but I want you to know that you’re not alone. There is a path to understanding and recovery, and it often begins with recognising the signs of addiction.
A helpful framework for understanding addiction is what’s known as “The Four C’s”: Compulsion, Craving, Consequences, and Control.
Compulsion: This is more than just a habit. It’s an overwhelming urge to use a substance or engage in a behavior, even when you don’t want to. It feels like you’re not in the driver’s seat of your own life anymore. This is the “drug-seeking” behavior you may have heard of, where finding and using the substance becomes the primary focus.
Craving: The craving for a substance can be as intense and demanding as the need for food or water. It can manifest as restlessness, insomnia, or a lack of appetite for anything other than the substance. This isn’t just a fleeting thought; it’s a powerful and consuming desire that can overshadow everything else.
Consequences: When you continue to use a substance or engage in a behavior despite the negative consequences, it’s a strong indicator of addiction. These consequences can be anything from strained relationships and financial problems to legal issues and health problems.
Control: The loss of control is a hallmark of addiction. You may have tried to cut back or stop on your own, only to find that you can’t. You may make promises to yourself and your loved ones that you’re unable to keep. This loss of control is not a moral failing; it’s a symptom of the disease of addiction.
My Perspective: A Journey of Healing
Through my own personal and professional experience, I’ve come to understand that addiction is often a symptom of something deeper, a condition I refer to as the “mother of all addictions”: codependency. This is the “invisible” addiction that can underpin our relationships with people, places, and things. It’s the reason why, despite our best efforts, we can find ourselves stuck in a cycle of addictive behavior.
As a compassionate and non-judgmental addiction coach, I can help you navigate the complexities of addiction and codependency. Together, we can create a personalised “daily deliberate action plan” to help you regain control of your life. I offer a safe and accepting environment where you can explore the root causes of your addiction and develop the tools and strategies you need to heal.
